Most toys in the marketplace are invented by adults whose objective is simply to sell a boatload of that toy.  Their ideas about what’s fun and appropriate for kids can sometimes be alarming, if not downright shocking.  Focus on classic, open-ended toys from natural materials like wooden blocks, dress-up clothes, play kitchens, arts and crafts, dolls, sturdy vehicles, and simple musical instruments.

Your child will certainly be exposed to the “other” kind of toy at some point, maybe as a gift, or at a playdate.  (I’m not talking about Legos or remote control vehicles here, I’m thinking about things like the Bratz Love Meter.  Check it out if you don’t believe me.)  Don’t panic!  Evaluate the situation honestly and don’t overreact.  If you are truly uncomfortable with something, then you can talk privately with your child later to explain your point of view.  You can say, “I really  like it better when the toys you play with seem more natural to you, then you get to make up the stories that you want.”  You’re teaching her to be selective about what she plays with, and that it matters because the development of her mind and imagination are important.  You’re also teaching her to be a more conscious consumer, which is a skill that’ll serve her well throughout her life.
